Teddy Spenser Isn’t Looking for Love Synopsis: Teddy Spenser spends his days putting together high end designs for the small tech/home goods company he works for. Things would be great if the uptight engineer, Romeo Blue, wasn’t there to ruin things. When their forced to work together to create the perfect flower vase and then are sent to present their work for funding things get interesting. With one bed, an eccentric rich woman putting them through tasks, and the fate of the company riding on them there’s nothing that can go wrong, right?
Review:
Look this wasn’t my favorite novel I’ve read this year. I was really looking forward to the enemies-to-lovers coworkers situation that’s always a good trope. But honestly, things fell flat. It was an okay read, but nothing that I would go out of my way to read again.
Here are some of my main gripes about the book:
1) Teddy and Romeo are kinda boring. They’re supposed to be enemies (or as close as you can make them because I get it, I still wouldn’t sleep with Dana from first grade she’s mortal enemy), but they’re not. Like Teddy doesn’t like Romeo because he got the office and he’s so put together, but the hatred isn’t really reciprocated. Romeo is fine with Teddy, if anything they’re both jealous of each other. You get little snippets of Teddy’s life throughout the book that make you more sympathetic to him, but not enough to make you root for him. Same with Romeo. If anything Romeo’s background is more sympathetic, but the way the Fielding approaches it it weird. Constantly quoting your mom and everything was strange.
2.) The plot is weird. First they’re making tech flower vases. FLOWER VASES! because that’s a whole industry. The beginning starts rather slower and then we add in an eccentric old rich woman who Teddy worships and things take off. It’s just an intense switch that makes the book feel disjointed. Once we get out to Seattle things speed up at such a fast pace and it’s just weird. The whole situation with the funding is just outlandish, and the way that Teddy and Romeo react to it was rushed. 3.) Teddy and Romeo’s romance is like insta-fast when they get out of their everyday routine. Get out west and BAM! love. I understand that they’ve been working together for a while, but still. The whole relationship seemed so fast paced.
I DID enjoy the ending though. Honestly, if the last few chapters of the book would have been the plot I would have enjoyed it more. I really appreciated that Fielding actually took the time to settle everything down from the novel to make it come to a complete stop without being jolted. It felt complete. And so few books are like that.
Long Story Short:
Do I recommend this book? Eh, idk. Depends on what kind of mood you’re in. Want a quirky novel that’s super fluffy? Then yes. I do. Anything else, no. I did enjoy it and it pairs really well with a glass of rose, but it’s not something I’m going to read again.
