Happy Singles Day Synopsis: Paige Parker is a professional organizer and workaholic. When her assistant and best friend basically forces her into vacation she picks a small B&B on an island off the North Carolina shore. It’s just what she needs to celebrate singles day. Lucas Croft technically owns the B&B but it hasn’t been running in years. When his sister relists it online, Paige shows up and throws a wrench in his single dad widower life. Maybe this trip is just what they both need to move past their histories and start realizing they have a future, perhaps together.
Review:
Reading Happy Singles Day was like watching a Hallmark Channel movie. It was cliche in a cute way, fairly sweet, and a simple read. To be honest I never really felt connected to the characters or felt like they were connected to each other either. Everything was very surface level. I liked that both Paige and Lucas had difficult pasts to overcome, but I wanted the author to dig a little more. Both of them needed a bit more depth to them and to also have some good conversations with each other instead of lusting for one another literally right after they meet. Which, if you’ve read it, did you think their thoughts were weird/over the top or is that just me? Also, did anyone get really weird vibes about the kinda sexist comments between Lucas and Paige? Just me? Organizing and cleanliness aren’t just feminine traits and being a douchebag isn’t a masculine trait.
I really enjoyed Lucas’s daughter and sister. They brought a much needed balance to the story, even if his four year old daughter was way beyond an actual four year old. The side plots were cute, if not a little too coincidental. I wanted more out of the last plot line that came out of nowhere at the end as well. The ending wasn’t my favorite nor was the epilogue, but it made sense for the story. I just wanted more build and more depth.
Long Story Short
Do I recommend this book? If you like lightweight, romance novels with a fade to black then yes. It was cute and fluffy. There wasn’t a lot of build, but it kept for a sweet read. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it either. I hope I’m not coming off too negative. It just wasn’t my cup of tea, but that doesn’t mean it was a bad book. If anything I’d borrow it from the library to enjoy it in a day or two.
